The Sunbirds Of SJR Eastwoods

SJR East-woods is the layout where I reside in Bangalore.

The Sunbirds are also known as the cousins of the humming bird.

The sunbirds have a slightly bigger body and a smaller beak compared to its cousin.

There are three types of Sunbirds found in Bangalore -

    1. Purple Sunbird
    1. Purple Rumped Sunbird
    1. Loten’s Sunbird

Due to the lush green and diverse flora present in our layout we are fortunate to see all three varieties in this Mini Biological Park known as Eastwood.

The Purple Sunbird is more commonly seen compared to the other two and the Loten’s  Sunbird being the most rarely seen.

These birds are very active in the mornings and evenings  and are easy to observe.

They can be frequently seen near Hibiscus and Ixora plants as they love the nectar from these beautiful flowering plants.

The Males of this Species are more colourful and become even more beautiful during the breeding season.

The Females of the three species look Identical and can be hard to differentiate while the males can be easily differentiated with basic understanding .

The Purple Sunbird Male is completely Purple (more like, dark blue in colour), the Purple Rumped can be identified from the yellow patch near its chest and the Loten,s Male has a slightly bigger beak can be identified by the Maroon coloured C shaped marking on the Chest.
